Via Hiero, thumbnails showing up for version, but nowhere else. User error?

Just processed and uploaded a chunk of shots from Hiero to Shotgun. Everything worked great and uploaded just fine, except the thumbnails for every shot are just black boxes. List view, Thumbnail view, and Master Detail view all show black box thumbnails. However, the version of the file uploaded via Hiero, shows the appropriate thumbnail.

Here is the path I'm using for the Shotgun Shot Processor and version.

[sequence] > {shot} > editorial > {date} > plates > shotCode.mov

The version is an H264.

Am I missing something in order to get an appropriate thumbnail automagically uploaded with the version? Thanks for your help.

    Hi there Jeff,

The default thumbnail logic for the upload will use Hiero's poster frame for a clip as the thumbnail for the shot.  If that poster frame isn't set, then I believe it defaults to the first frame.  Do these shots start with a black frame?  If so you could select a different frame by opening the clip and in the A/B popup use the camera icon to set the current frame to be the poster frame.

    poster_frame.png

As of the last release of the tk-hiero-export app, this logic was moved into a hook, so you could use whatever custom logic you'd like to generate the thumbnail.

If the clip thumbnails in Hiero aren't black and something else is going on, then there might be an error on thumbnail generation.  You should see a message in the script panel that the thumbnail wasn't generated, and if you turn on debug_logging for the tk-hiero engine you'll see the full exception, which should give more info as to what is going on.

    Hopefully that helps!

Thank you for the response. I'm diving into this today and we look at the items you mentioned.

No, the shots don't start with a black frame, which is what prompted me to post.

Hey Jeff, could you run the updater and grab an update to tk-hiero-export?  There was a fix to the default hook that I pushed out yesterday that I think'll fix this for you.  If it doesn't, then definitely send on the results of turning on debug_logging.

    Hey Rob,

Double checked that the poster frame was set properly. Looked in the script window and saw no indication of an error in thumbnail generation.

Next step: I'll run an update and turn on the debug_logging.

Thanks for your help! - Jeff

Ok. Ran the updater. Tried the method you suggested, it totally worked, but I realized the real issue: Hiero and Shotgun are perfectly creating "sequence" thumbnails and when I export a whole sequence to build a shot list, the "sequence" has a pretty little thumbnail but I'm not getting any "shot" thumbnails.

(Sorry for not noticing and conveying this earlier.)

Hi there Jeff, after a little more digging, I have another guess at what was going on here.

The default thumbnail logic for shots used the poster frame for the source item corresponding to a shot.  If the source didn't have a poster frame it would start at the first frame of the source, even if the shot cut in on later frame.  Did the sources for your shots start black?  If so, then you were probably just getting those frames uploaded.

I just pushed out an update to the default logic so that the middle frame from the cut is used (which should make more sense for everybody).  If you update your tk-hiero-export app you should see the new behavior.  Let us know if that looks any better!

    Rob,

That is exactly what was happening. Yes, the sources for the shots started black. I'll update now and report back! Thanks so much for the help.
