WYSIWYG editor for text fields

You can put html markup in a text field and it'll be rendered appropriately.  Given that, it would be great if a simple formatting interface were available.  We definitely have people wanting to highlight some notes in bold or red, or underline some specific instructions for emphasis.  You can do it, but only if you know your html.

Hey Rob, in 1.7 we're actually removing the ability to enter raw html into text fields, as it has some serious security concerns, as well as when people would forget to close a tag it could screw up the entire page.  But!  We've added in support for Textile markup, which you can find documentation for here:  https://support.shotgunsoftware.com/entries/44465-formatting-text We will be adding a WYSIWYG editor for that format at some point, or at very least some [B] [U] [I] buttons that will wrap the section in the correct markup.

We'll need to make sure we support that markup in the grid and field widgets, as right now that markup is only supported on the note and ticket detail pages.  Rob, where would you expect to see this formatting?

We could use the ability to markup any duration, currancy, date, number, percentage, timecode and text.  We need the ability to markup these so we know when a given value has gone over the bid or the actual is in negative territory.  Honestly we don't need the whole subset of features.  We generally need to make the field bold and or change the text color.  I realize you can do some of this via the preferences but it only really applies to currency.  The reason we want it for fields other than text is that we need to do summaries and markups on non text fields.

I was thinking of using a couple of the other requested features for things like overages (conditional formatting probably, or filters that compare fields).  I was really thinking of this for text fields, and it should show up anywhere that text field is shown... be it spreadsheet, grid, or details field.  That would be great.  If it is doable, I could easily see a simple markup toolbar (much like these forums have at the bottom of the comment text entry) show up whenever ther is something that I'm typing in (duration, number, etc.) which would let me add some formatting to what I'm entering.  But really... text would be the big one.

We still have not removed support for HTML in text fields but we still plan to. Conditional formatting I think covers some of the sideband conversation in this ticket which was released in v1.12:

    https://support.shotgunsoftware.com/entries/76206-changing-field-and-row-color-and-font-styles-with-explicit-and-rule-based-conditional-formatting

We still have some sort of simple markup editor on the roadmap to support basic formatting in text fields. Stay tuned.

This is an ongoing discussion. Simple HTML might be easy enough to keep (eg. <strong>, <b>, <i>, <em>) What are you using <font> for?
