Global Playlists

Currently the Playlist entity in Shotgun is a Project specific entity. We've had some studios request the ability to have playlists contains versions from many different projects (i.e a Global Playlist).

There are many places in Shotgun where we assume that playlists belong to a project: Client Review, Review Notes App, Screening Room, Media App, RV integration, etc, so please include details of your use-case, as that will help us scope this feature.

Constructing a sizzle reel Playlist consisting of super-cool Shot Versions to highlight from multiple shows immediately comes to mind.

For those desiring a cross-shows / studio-wide Asset Library, creating a Playlist of "hero" Versions linked to "global" Assets would be another good use-case.

We have another particular use-case where we need to assemble early dev artwork into Playlists to be reviewed by off-site Legal folks for clearance.  Sometimes it's easiest for their workflow i.e. to maximize the lawyers' time to give them a bunch of artwork all at once, which may very well include cross-show stuff.  This would be a case for using a Global Playlist in the Client Review site.

Of course for all of those use-cases, one could technically create a "Library" Project and re-publish the selected Versions from the various different shows to that Library Project... but that's redundant and not very DRY.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_repeat_yourself

I suppose one alternative would be to create a CustomNonProjectPlaylistEntity that has the same functionality as a Playlist, including the special Linking versions toolbar and Review Notes integration, etc.  That's probably also not good DRY practice on Shotgun's side though.

Also, I think this is a duplicate of https://support.shotgunsoftware.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/209484868-Add-Versions-to-Playlists-on-other-projects .  Can we merge the two?  And more importantly, sum the upvotes so that this gets to the top of the priority list that much faster?  ;-)
