Shotgun Create for Reviewers

Shotgun Create helps reviewers be aware of when their artists are waiting for feedback and provides tools to provide clear feedback. Meaning your team spends more time on the creative work vs battling tools.

To get started, download Shotgun Create from the Apps menu, follow the installation steps, and launch the app.

You can then log into your Shotgun site—giving you instant access to all your project information and media.

My Reviews

As a reviewer, it’s up to you to provide feedback and ensure the creative vision of the project. My Reviews lets you know when there’s new work to review.

In Shotgun, a Reviewer is anyone that has been added to the Reviewer field on a Task. This can happen in two ways: a Reviewer can be added to a Task from within Shotgun Create when an Artist submits work or Reviewers can be added to the Task Reviewer field manually in Shotgun via a browser. While this is usually something your Shotgun Admin will handle, it’s good to be aware that it’s possible to make these changes. (Note: if you’re seeing an empty screen in My Reviews, it’s probably due to not being set as Reviewer in the Reviewer Task field.)

My Reviews shows you Tasks you are a Reviewer on and splits them into tabs. Tasks in Pending Review have Versions on them and represent Artists that are blocked and needing your attention. Tasks in All have no more pending review Versions on them. Both tabs are sorted by the most recently updated version, so you can easily see what's new or track down something you recently said.

You can access My Reviews by clicking on My Tasks to reveal a drop-down menu. You can select a specific project or All Projects from the Project list.

My Reviews shows you all the Tasks where you’ve been assigned as a Reviewer.

Tasks appearing in in Pending Review need your attention. All shows you every Task where you’re set as a Reviewer. You’re up to date and your artists are unlocked when the Pending Review view reaches zero.

A blue dot on the top left of the thumbnail indicates that there is unread feedback on that task.

Click on the Task to view the work in the Task View. From here, you can add to the conversation and provide feedback.

Note: In multiple locations within the Shotgun web app, you can also launch Shotgun Create. For example, an Open in Shotgun Create button appears on the My Tasks page. You can also select Open in Shotgun Create when right-clicking Tasks or Versions linked to Tasks.

Using the player and having a conversation

When you click on a thumbnail in My Tasks, the media will be loaded in the player.

Playback can be controlled via the player controls and your mouse or through keyboard hotkeys.

You can discuss the work by adding a note via the conversation panel on the right or provide detailed feedback by entering Review Mode.

When composing a draft, in addition to written feedback (including markdown text), you also have access to annotation tools to help you have more concise and efficient conversations.

Within Review Mode, you can also drag and drop media, record your screen, or capture a screenshot.

To view previous versions on the task, click on the version you’d like in the conversation pane or the up/down icons in the main player window. If you prefer keyboard hotkeys, you can press the up or down keys.

You can also add additional Reviewers within Shotgun Create by clicking on the members and selecting who you'd like to add.

Comparing two versions

While in the Task View, you can use the Compare tools to compare and annotate two versions of a task using various modes.

Select the Compare mode (Side by Side, Opacity, Difference, or Wipe), then use the version selectors to choose which two versions to compare, or use hotkeys to quickly switch versions:

  • up/down to change the B version
  • SHIFT+up/down to change the A version

Add notes or annotate across the two versions. To exit Compare mode, click the Single View icon.

Quick access to important info

To quickly see relevant information about your work, click on the (i) icon to open the Task View.

The information that shows up here can be configured. While this is usually something your Shotgun Admin will handle, it’s good to be aware that it’s possible to make changes.

My Tasks

When you log into Shotgun Create, the first thing you’ll see is a lineup of the Tasks assigned to you in My Tasks.

My Tasks gives you an overview of what you need to work on and a summary of related information. By default, you'll be on the Active tab which represents work you need to pay attention to now.

Upcoming represents work that has yet to be started, while Done represents any task where your work is complete.

By default, My Tasks is sorted by Due Date, but you can have your admin choose a more appropriate field for your workflow to appear on each Task, and dictate the sort order.

Launching your creative apps

Shotgun Create makes is easy to open your work in your creative apps like Maya or Nuke, from My Tasks or the Task view - just hover over the icon to quickly see the app list, then select which installed app to launch.
