Tags

Tags allow you to assign any number of arbitrary labels to an entity.

The Tags page

You can create, edit, merge, and delete Tags via the Tags page. Go to the page via the Admin section of the settings menu, and then select the “More” button.

Tag list page

On this page, you can also check the Usage Count column to see the number of times a Tag is used on your site.

Tag fields

Tag fields can contain multiple Tags, a single Tag, or no Tags.

To enter a value in a Tag field, simply type it in. As you type, the autocomplete function will return any existing Tags that match the string you are typing.

You can also keep typing to create a new Tag. When you are done entering your Tag, click outside of the Tag field to save and create the new Tag.

New tag

Now if you try and enter the same Tag on another entity, you will see it appear in the autocomplete as you start typing. If you want to enter multiple Tags, separate them with commas.

Note: You cannot search for Tags in Shotgun in the global search, but you can filter Tags.

    Can you search by tags?

Artists cannot create tags - there is a custom conditional that cannot be edited by the end user. This drastically limits the usefulness of this function.

Hi Heather, yeah, totally.  I was pretty sad when I upgraded our test sites here at Laika to v7.5.2 and still couldn't tell what entities were using what Tags.  I agree with you -- being able to manage what's tagged with what seems like the fundamental use-case behind making Tags a full-fledged entity.  I filed a feature request to add that capability at https://support.shotgunsoftware.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115007459473-See-All-Entities-linked-to-a-Tag ... please vote it up!  :-)

I wrote up a workaround in that feature request that you could use in the meantime.  Cheers

thanks for the update Tony - we are just about to upgrade to the version that gives us that functionality.  looking forward to it.  at some point, it would be really great if it could also break down which entities use the tags. (mostly to see if there are multiple entities using the same ones and also to change out mis-spelled one for correct ones).

And what are they used for once you have typed all the tags that you need? I can't search using them.

it's great to have the visbility now, but is there anything with Site Preferences which will permit us to show this page to other Permission groups that are non-admin?  we have this area very locked down and only a handful of people can access the Admin section.

@Heather:  now that Tags are a supported entity, you can create your own Pages showing Tags.  You can [+] add a new Page from scratch or Save-Page-As on the admin page to make a copy in a non-Admin folder.

@Pete:  the API has had support for Tags for a while.  Before 7.1.2, all "taggable" entities had a `tag_list` field which was literally just a list of text strings.  Now that field has been replaced by a `tags` field which works like other multi-entity fields i.e. it holds a list of dictionaries of Tag entities.  You can use the `name_contains` filter operator to make new Tags searchable like old ones.

Juanmaria and Lucy : In the search text-box, you can click on the down arrow to select "tag" as a search field.

Is there any API support for Tags yet?
